Chlorpropamide (Diabinese)

How it works and side effects of this medication


Chlorpropamide (Diabinese) is an oral medication in a class of drugs called sulfonylureas and a commonly used drug to help treat type 2 diabetes.
It works in two ways:

1) Helps your pancreas make more insulin
2) Helps your body use the insulin it makes


Before you consider taking this medication please consult with your doctor about the following medical conditions as adjustments to dosing may be needed:

- Pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast feeding
- Allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
- History of liver, kidney, thyroid, or heart problems
- Stomach or bowel problems
- History of hormonal problems (adrenal or pituitary problems)


Side Effects

Common

- Dizziness
- Headache
- Nausea

Severe

- Allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue)- Chest pain or irregular heartbeat
- Confusion
- Dark urine
- Fainting
- Fever
- Chills
- Persistent sore throat
- Low blood sugar symptoms (dizziness, drowsiness, tremors, unusual sweating, weakness)
- Severe or persistent blurred vision or other vision problems
- Unusual bruising or bleeding
- Unusual tiredness or weakness
- Yellowing of the eyes or skin
