Glipizide (Glucotrol) Diabetes Drug

Understand how this medication works and its side effects


Medications Facts :

Glipizide (Glucotrol) is an oral medication in a class of drugs called sulfonylureas and a commonly used drug to help treat type 2 diabetes.

It works in two ways:

1) Helps your pancreas make more insulin
2) Helps your body use the insulin it makes


Before you consider taking this medication please consult with your doctor about the following medical conditions as adjustments to dosing may be needed:

- Have kidney disease
- Have liver disease
- Have thyroid disease
- Have a serious infection, illness, or injury
- Need to have surgery


Side Effects:

Serious

- Allergic reaction – (which can consist of difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, and/or hives.)
Stop taking immediately and seek emergency medical attention.

Common

Other less serious side effects that can result if your blood sugar is too high or too low are:

Low blood sugar or Hypoglycemia:

- Shaking
- Headache
- Cold sweats
- Pale, cool skin
- Anxiety
- Difficulty concentrating

It is recommended to keep hard, sugary candy, chocolate, or fruit juice on hand to help treat these episodes of low blood sugar.


High blood sugar or Hyperglycemia:

- Increased thirst
- Increased hunger
- Increased urination


If you are considering taking this medication for the long term you should discuss the cardiovascular complications with your doctor and decide if other treatment options are possible.
