FactsRosiglitazone (Avandia) is an oral medication in a class of drugs called thiazolidinedione used to treat
type 2
diabetes.
It works by:
1) By making your body’s cells more sensitive to insulin.
Before you consider taking this medication please consult with your doctor about the following medical conditions because some conditions may interact with this medication:
- Pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast feeding
- Allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
- Have diabetic ketoacidosis
- History of liver problems, abnormal liver function,
heart problems,
or
eye or vision problems
- Have swelling problems (edema)
Side Effects
Common:
- Headache - Weight gain
Severe:
- Allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue) - Blurred vision or other vision changes - Symptoms of heart failure (shortness of breath, sudden unexplained weight gain, swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet) - Symptoms of liver problems (dark urine, stomach pain, unexplained nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin or eyes, sweating) - Symptoms of low blood sugar (anxiety, chills, increased hunger, headache, increased dizziness or drowsiness, tremors) - Unusual bone pain - Unusual tiredness or weakness
If you are taking or consider taking this medication and have a history of heart failure please consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of the severe side effects listed above as this medication may cause or worsen heart failure in some patients.
