Turmeric (Curcuma) health supplements look promising in battling Diabetes
Turmeric, traditionally called Indian saffron, comes from the root of the Curcuma plant and has a tough brown skin and an orange flesh. It grows native to Indonesia and southern India where it has been harvested for more than 5,000 years as an Ayurvedic pharmacopeia. It is a good source of iron, manganese, vitamin B6, fiber and potassium.
It has been used as a medicine in China and India for hundreds of years to treat inflammation. It has also been known to be a strong antioxidant to protect the body’s cells from damage caused by oxidation. Oxidation is the by-product, after the chemical process that allows the body to break foods down into components the body can use. It’s believed that the by-products can suppress how the immune system functions and damage the body’s cells.
Health Benefits
The main organs that it treats are the skin, heart, liver and lungs. Its properties include analgesic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-allergic, antioxidant, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, cardiovascular, digestive, and diuretic. It treats a wide variety of conditions from arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, cystic fibrosis,
cancer,
improves liver function,
cardiovascular
and
Alzheimer's protection,
lowers cholerstrol, and helps depression and balance hormones.
Diabetes Connection
Research on this herb suggests that it helps the red blood cells use more blood sugar allowing diabetic patients to have more normal levels. Some studies show that it may help protect against
kidney
and
retinal problems
associated with diabetes. It is not something that people should be allergic to and there doesn’t seem to be a safety limit on how much would be toxic to the body. Some research suggest to take 250 to 500 mg three times per day for the best results.
