Virus Linked to Type 1 Diabetes
A study done by Italian scientists has found a virus linked to
type 1 diabetes
that may give a clue as to what triggers the disease. In the study they found that 83% of the children had enterovirus infection in their blood. They compared this to the 7% that did not have the disease.
Enteroviruses are very common, second to the common cold virus, they live in the gastrointestinal tract. Most people who are infected have no symptoms, while others will have flu like symptoms such as aching muscles, rash or in servere cases an attack of the nervous system.
Researchers caution that they have not proved the virus to be the cause of the disease. This study indicates a link between the viral infection and type 1 diabetes, which could lead to new and better ways to treat the disease.
